Final Thoughts
Food is more than just fuel—it’s comfort, morale, and even motivation during tough times. Having these spice mixes on hand ensures that even the most basic meals can be enjoyable. Whether you’re prepping for an uncertain future or just want to enhance your everyday cooking, making your own seasonings is an easy and rewarding skill.

Prepping on Autopilot | Episode 358
Prepping doesn’t have to be a time-consuming task. With the right systems in place, you can automate your preparedness efforts, ensuring that you and your family are always ready for whatever comes your way. In this episode of the Survivalpunk Podcast, we dive into strategies for putting prepping on autopilot so you can focus on other aspects of life while still staying prepared.
Automating Food Storage
Keeping a well-stocked pantry and long-term food supply is essential, but manually managing your inventory can be a hassle. Thankfully, several subscription services now make it easy to build and maintain your emergency food storage with little effort. Some excellent options include:
Valley Food Storage – A subscription service that delivers long-lasting, high-quality survival food on a monthly basis, helping you gradually build your stockpile.
Ready Project – Offers a variety of emergency food kits with convenient monthly delivery, ensuring you always have a supply of nutritious, long-lasting meals.
ReadyWise – Known for its freeze-dried and dehydrated food kits, ReadyWise helps automate food storage with bulk meal plans designed for long-term use.
Ready Supply Foods – Provides high-calorie, long-term food storage solutions to help preppers stay prepared without constantly monitoring their supplies.
Automating Water Security
Having access to clean water is just as important as food storage. Consider setting up:
Rainwater Collection Systems – Install rain barrels with filtration to collect and store clean water for emergencies.
Water Delivery Subscriptions – Some services allow you to receive large water containers regularly so you always have an emergency supply.
Filtration Systems – Invest in a high-quality gravity-fed water filter that continuously purifies water without requiring electricity.
Automating Finances for Prepping
Prepping can get expensive, but you can make it more manageable by automating your financial contributions:
Dedicated Prepping Savings Account – Set up an automatic transfer to a separate account for emergency preparedness expenses.
Auto-Refill for Essential Supplies – Use online retailers like Amazon’s Subscribe & Save to get regular shipments of key survival items like batteries, first-aid supplies, and hygiene products.
Automating Skills Development
Being prepared isn’t just about stockpiling supplies—you need to develop survival skills too. Here are ways to ensure consistent learning:
Online Course Subscriptions – Platforms like Skillshare and Udemy offer survival and homesteading courses on demand.
Local Class Sign-Ups – Many community centers offer self-defense, first aid, and gardening courses that you can register for in advance.
Scheduled Practice Days – Set reminders on your phone for regular skill-building activities, such as practicing fire-starting, cooking with stored food, or testing gear.
Automating Communication & Alerts
Staying informed is crucial in an emergency. Set up these automated systems to keep yourself updated:
NOAA Weather Alerts – Get real-time updates on severe weather by enabling notifications from NOAA and emergency apps.
Emergency Contact Lists – Use apps like Signal or Zello to create pre-set emergency communication plans with friends and family.
Automated Check-In Systems – Set up scheduled check-ins with loved ones via text or email during emergency situations.
Final Thoughts
Prepping on autopilot is all about setting up systems that work for you without constant intervention. By automating your food, water, finances, skills, and communication strategies, you can ensure that your preparedness efforts continue smoothly in the background of your daily life. In this episode, we discuss these strategies and more to help you create a self-sustaining prepping plan with minimal effort.
Stay ready, stay safe, and keep prepping smart! Tune into Episode 358 of the Survivalpunk Podcast for a full breakdown.

The Lost Skills of Our Grandparents | Episode 357
In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, many of the skills that kept our grandparents self-sufficient and resilient have been forgotten. These skills were essential for survival before the conveniences of modern technology, and as preppers and homesteaders, we can learn a lot from the past. In this episode, we dive into the lost skills of our grandparents and why they matter more than ever today.
Food Preservation: Canning, Smoking, and Root Cellars
Before refrigeration, people had to be resourceful with food storage. Canning was one of the most popular methods, with families using water bath and pressure canning to preserve vegetables, meats, and fruits. Smoking and curing meats provided a way to store protein long-term without refrigeration. Root cellars, the original off-grid refrigerators, kept vegetables fresh through the winter months using natural temperature control.
Cooking from Scratch and Stretching Ingredients
Our grandparents knew how to make the most out of simple ingredients. They baked their own bread, churned butter, and made cheese from fresh milk. Nothing went to waste—leftovers became soups, and every part of an animal was used. Depression-era meals were designed to be filling and nutritious with minimal resources, a skill set that is incredibly valuable for modern preppers.
Self-Sufficiency on the Homestead
Homesteading was a way of life for past generations. Backyard chickens provided eggs and meat, while rabbits were an efficient protein source. Heirloom gardening ensured a steady supply of food, and saving seeds guaranteed crops for the next year. Composting and natural fertilizers kept the soil healthy without synthetic chemicals.
Making and Repairing Clothes
In a time before fast fashion, people knew how to repair and make their own clothing. Sewing, darning socks, and patching garments extended the life of every item. Some even tanned hides to create leather for durable shoes and workwear. These skills not only saved money but also ensured self-reliance.
Natural Remedies and Home Medicine
Before over-the-counter medicines were widely available, families relied on herbal remedies and natural treatments. Homemade salves, tinctures, and poultices treated everything from cuts to colds. Many households had a go-to list of medicinal plants, such as chamomile for relaxation, garlic for immune support, and honey for wound care. Basic first aid knowledge was also essential for survival.
Off-Grid Skills: Surviving Without Modern Technology
Our grandparents didn’t have the luxury of GPS, smartphones, or even reliable electricity. They knew how to navigate using the sun, stars, and landmarks. Many homes were heated with wood, and alternative fuels like kerosene were common. Water had to be sourced and purified naturally, whether from wells, rain catchment, or boiling. Making soap and candles at home was a necessity rather than a hobby.
Bartering and Community Cooperation
Self-sufficiency didn’t mean isolation. Communities thrived on bartering and cooperation. People traded goods and services instead of relying on big-box stores. Skills like blacksmithing, carpentry, and midwifery were highly valued. Neighbors helped each other out, reinforcing the importance of strong community ties—a lesson modern preppers can take to heart.
Why These Skills Matter Today
The world is unpredictable. Whether it’s economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, or natural disasters, the ability to rely on old-school skills can make a huge difference. By learning these lost arts, we can regain a sense of independence and resilience that many have forgotten.
What’s Next?
Take a look at your daily life—what skills could you start learning today? Whether it’s growing your own food, making your own bread, or learning basic sewing, every step toward self-reliance is a step toward security.
Join us in this episode as we explore these invaluable lessons from the past and how they can help us prepare for the future. Tune in now to Episode 357 of the Survivalpunk Podcast!

Finding the Perfect Knife | Episode 356
Losing your everyday carry (EDC) knife can be frustrating, but it also presents an opportunity to reassess what you truly need in a blade. In this episode of the Survivalpunk Podcast, I dive into my preferences for EDC knives, survival knives, and the importance of a two-knife system for the outdoors.
Choosing the Right EDC Knife
A good EDC knife strikes a balance between utility and self-defense. I prefer a medium-blade knife—big enough to handle common cutting tasks yet still compact for daily carry. Features I look for include:
Blade Length: Around 3-4 inches for versatility.
Steel Type: High-carbon or stainless steel for durability.
Locking Mechanism: A reliable lock for safety.
Deployment: Easy one-handed opening.
Survival & Camping Knife Selection
When it comes to outdoor knives, I believe in a two-knife system:
A Large Chopper: This knife is meant for heavy-duty tasks like batoning wood and clearing brush. A good example would be a kukri or a large Bowie-style knife.
A Smaller Bushcraft Knife: Precision cutting, carving, and detailed work require a smaller, more maneuverable knife, like a Morakniv or a compact fixed blade.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re looking for an EDC knife or a survival blade, it’s crucial to choose tools that fit your specific needs and environment. A knife is one of the most valuable tools in a prepper’s arsenal—losing one might just be the push you need to find an even better replacement.
What’s your go-to knife for EDC and survival? Let me know in the comments or join the discussion on the podcast!
