The Lost Skills of Our Grandparents | Episode 357
In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, many of the skills that kept our grandparents self-sufficient and resilient have been forgotten. These skills were essential for survival before the conveniences of modern technology, and as preppers and homesteaders, we can learn a lot from the past. In this episode, we dive into the lost skills of our grandparents and why they matter more than ever today.
Food Preservation: Canning, Smoking, and Root Cellars
Before refrigeration, people had to be resourceful with food storage. Canning was one of the most popular methods, with families using water bath and pressure canning to preserve vegetables, meats, and fruits. Smoking and curing meats provided a way to store protein long-term without refrigeration. Root cellars, the original off-grid refrigerators, kept vegetables fresh through the winter months using natural temperature control.
Cooking from Scratch and Stretching Ingredients
Our grandparents knew how to make the most out of simple ingredients. They baked their own bread, churned butter, and made cheese from fresh milk. Nothing went to waste—leftovers became soups, and every part of an animal was used. Depression-era meals were designed to be filling and nutritious with minimal resources, a skill set that is incredibly valuable for modern preppers.
Self-Sufficiency on the Homestead
Homesteading was a way of life for past generations. Backyard chickens provided eggs and meat, while rabbits were an efficient protein source. Heirloom gardening ensured a steady supply of food, and saving seeds guaranteed crops for the next year. Composting and natural fertilizers kept the soil healthy without synthetic chemicals.
Making and Repairing Clothes
In a time before fast fashion, people knew how to repair and make their own clothing. Sewing, darning socks, and patching garments extended the life of every item. Some even tanned hides to create leather for durable shoes and workwear. These skills not only saved money but also ensured self-reliance.
Natural Remedies and Home Medicine
Before over-the-counter medicines were widely available, families relied on herbal remedies and natural treatments. Homemade salves, tinctures, and poultices treated everything from cuts to colds. Many households had a go-to list of medicinal plants, such as chamomile for relaxation, garlic for immune support, and honey for wound care. Basic first aid knowledge was also essential for survival.
Off-Grid Skills: Surviving Without Modern Technology
Our grandparents didn’t have the luxury of GPS, smartphones, or even reliable electricity. They knew how to navigate using the sun, stars, and landmarks. Many homes were heated with wood, and alternative fuels like kerosene were common. Water had to be sourced and purified naturally, whether from wells, rain catchment, or boiling. Making soap and candles at home was a necessity rather than a hobby.
Bartering and Community Cooperation
Self-sufficiency didn’t mean isolation. Communities thrived on bartering and cooperation. People traded goods and services instead of relying on big-box stores. Skills like blacksmithing, carpentry, and midwifery were highly valued. Neighbors helped each other out, reinforcing the importance of strong community ties—a lesson modern preppers can take to heart.
Why These Skills Matter Today
The world is unpredictable. Whether it’s economic downturns, supply chain disruptions, or natural disasters, the ability to rely on old-school skills can make a huge difference. By learning these lost arts, we can regain a sense of independence and resilience that many have forgotten.
What’s Next?
Take a look at your daily life—what skills could you start learning today? Whether it’s growing your own food, making your own bread, or learning basic sewing, every step toward self-reliance is a step toward security.
Join us in this episode as we explore these invaluable lessons from the past and how they can help us prepare for the future. Tune in now to Episode 357 of the Survivalpunk Podcast!

Finding the Perfect Knife | Episode 356
Losing your everyday carry (EDC) knife can be frustrating, but it also presents an opportunity to reassess what you truly need in a blade. In this episode of the Survivalpunk Podcast, I dive into my preferences for EDC knives, survival knives, and the importance of a two-knife system for the outdoors.
Choosing the Right EDC Knife
A good EDC knife strikes a balance between utility and self-defense. I prefer a medium-blade knife—big enough to handle common cutting tasks yet still compact for daily carry. Features I look for include:
Blade Length: Around 3-4 inches for versatility.
Steel Type: High-carbon or stainless steel for durability.
Locking Mechanism: A reliable lock for safety.
Deployment: Easy one-handed opening.
Survival & Camping Knife Selection
When it comes to outdoor knives, I believe in a two-knife system:
A Large Chopper: This knife is meant for heavy-duty tasks like batoning wood and clearing brush. A good example would be a kukri or a large Bowie-style knife.
A Smaller Bushcraft Knife: Precision cutting, carving, and detailed work require a smaller, more maneuverable knife, like a Morakniv or a compact fixed blade.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re looking for an EDC knife or a survival blade, it’s crucial to choose tools that fit your specific needs and environment. A knife is one of the most valuable tools in a prepper’s arsenal—losing one might just be the push you need to find an even better replacement.
What’s your go-to knife for EDC and survival? Let me know in the comments or join the discussion on the podcast!

The Second Amendment Revival| Episode 355
The Second Amendment has been at the forefront of legal and political battles for years, but recently, there has been a wave of pro-2A victories across the country. As a prepper, these developments have a direct impact on personal security, self-reliance, and the ability to protect one’s family in times of crisis. In this episode, we’re breaking down what these advances mean, how they affect preppers, and what you can do to stay informed.
Recent Pro-2A Wins
Across multiple states and even at the federal level, Second Amendment rights have seen significant protections and expansions. Some of the biggest wins include:
Constitutional Carry Laws – More states have adopted permitless carry, allowing law-abiding citizens to carry without a government-issued permit.
Supreme Court Rulings – Landmark decisions have reinforced gun rights and struck down restrictive laws that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms.
State-Level Protections – Several states have passed laws that limit federal overreach and protect residents from unconstitutional gun control measures.
These victories signal a shift toward reinforcing the Second Amendment as a fundamental right rather than a privilege subject to excessive government restrictions.
Why This Matters for Preppers
For preppers, the right to bear arms is about more than just personal protection—it’s about self-sufficiency, deterrence, and being able to defend one’s home and resources in a crisis. Here’s why these recent wins are significant:
Easier Access to Self-Defense Tools – Less red tape means more people can legally obtain and carry firearms for protection.
Greater Stability in Firearm Ownership – With stronger legal precedents in place, the likelihood of sweeping bans or confiscations is reduced.
Encourages a Culture of Preparedness – When communities embrace self-defense, it fosters a mindset of responsibility and resilience.
Gun Rights in Your State
While some states are expanding 2A protections, others continue to restrict access to firearms. If you live in a restrictive state, now is the time to be aware of your local laws and stay engaged in the fight for your rights.
Check your state’s stance on:
Constitutional Carry
Magazine Capacity Limits
Assault Weapon Bans
Red Flag Laws
Background Check Requirements
If your state is moving in the wrong direction, advocacy and awareness are key. Stay involved with pro-2A organizations that fight for your rights.
Best Firearms for Preppers
Not all firearms are created equal when it comes to prepping. If you’re considering adding to your arsenal, here are some top choices based on reliability, affordability, and availability of ammunition:
12-Gauge Shotgun – Versatile for both defense and hunting.
AR-15 or Similar Rifle – Lightweight, customizable, and easy to find ammo for.
9mm Handgun – Widely available and a good choice for everyday carry.
.22LR Rifle – Great for small game hunting and training.
What’s Next for 2A?
While these recent wins are promising, the fight for gun rights is far from over. Here’s what to watch for in the coming months:
Potential new Supreme Court cases that could further solidify 2A protections.
Federal and state-level legislative battles.
The impact of upcoming elections on gun rights.
Stay Vigilant and Stay Informed
The right to bear arms is fundamental, but it requires constant vigilance to protect it. As preppers, we know that self-reliance isn’t just about food and water—it’s also about defending what we’ve built. Keep an eye on changing laws, stay involved in the fight for your rights, and always be prepared.
Let us know your thoughts! How do you feel about these recent Second Amendment advances? What do you think the future holds for gun rights?

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life | Episode 354When the world seems to be heading toward chaos, it’s easy to get caught up in fear and negativity. But prepping isn’t just about surviving—it’s about thriving, staying hopeful, and making the best out of any situation. In this episode, we explore how to maintain a positive mindset during uncertain times and why preparedness itself is an act of hope.
Staying Hopeful During the CollapseThe news cycle thrives on doom and gloom, making it hard to stay optimistic. But history has shown that humanity is resilient. No matter what hardships come our way, people adapt, rebuild, and find ways to improve their circumstances. Instead of focusing on what could go wrong, channel your energy into what you can control. Preparing for hard times isn’t a sign of paranoia—it’s a way to ensure that you and your loved ones can thrive.
Prepping Gives You HopeSome people think of prepping as an act of fear, but in reality, it’s the opposite. Being prepared allows you to face the future with confidence rather than anxiety. When you have food stored, skills developed, and a plan in place, you don’t have to live in constant worry. Instead, you gain peace of mind knowing that you’re ready for whatever comes next. Preparedness is empowerment, and empowerment fosters optimism.
Do Things That Make You HappySurvival isn’t just about having enough food and water—it’s about maintaining mental and emotional well-being. Even in tough times, it’s crucial to do things that bring joy. Whether it’s playing music, gardening, reading, or spending time with loved ones, these activities help keep spirits high. A positive mindset can mean the difference between thriving and simply enduring hardship.
Building a Positive Survival MindsetA strong mindset is just as important as physical preparedness. Here are some ways to maintain a positive attitude:
Gratitude Practice: Focus on what you have rather than what you lack.Problem-Solving Mentality: Look at challenges as puzzles to solve, not insurmountable obstacles.Self-Reliance as a Strength: Knowing that you can take care of yourself fosters confidence and peace of mind.Adaptability: The ability to pivot and make the best of a situation is invaluable in survival and everyday life.Finding Silver LiningsEvery challenge comes with an opportunity for growth. Hard times can teach valuable skills, strengthen relationships, and help you appreciate the simple things in life. Many preppers find joy in learning self-sufficiency skills like gardening, food preservation, and homesteading, which provide not only security but also a deep sense of accomplishment.
Creating a Support NetworkOne of the most overlooked aspects of prepping is the importance of community. Having a support network can make all the difference. Whether it’s family, close friends, or a like-minded group of preppers, being surrounded by positive, resourceful people makes tough times easier. Humans are social creatures—we are stronger together.
Final ThoughtsBeing prepared doesn’t mean living in fear. It means embracing the future with confidence and ensuring that no matter what happens, you have the ability to take care of yourself and those you love. By maintaining a hopeful outlook, focusing on what brings you joy, and building resilience, you can truly thrive, no matter what challenges arise.
So keep prepping, stay positive, and always look on the bright side of life!

Chickens for Beginners | Episode 353
Raising chickens is a great step toward self-sufficiency, providing fresh eggs, meat, pest control, and natural fertilizer for your garden. Whether you’re in a rural area or even a more urban setting, chickens can be a great addition to your homestead. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
Why Raise Chickens?
Chickens offer numerous benefits beyond just egg production. They help with composting kitchen scraps, reduce insects in your yard, and provide valuable manure for your garden. Plus, raising chickens can be a rewarding experience, especially if you have children who can learn responsibility by caring for them.
Choosing the Right Breed
Not all chickens are the same! Some breeds are better suited for egg-laying, while others are raised for meat. For beginners, hardy, low-maintenance breeds are ideal. Here are a few top choices:
Rhode Island Reds – Great layers, hardy in different climates
Buff Orpingtons – Friendly, good for both eggs and meat
Barred Rocks – Low maintenance, excellent layers
Leghorns – High egg production, but more active and independent
Setting Up a Coop
Your chickens need a safe, comfortable place to live. A well-designed coop should include:
Proper space – At least 2-3 square feet per bird inside the coop and 8-10 square feet in the run.
Roosting bars – Chickens like to perch off the ground while sleeping.
Nesting boxes – One box for every 3-4 hens is sufficient.
Ventilation – Good airflow prevents moisture buildup and respiratory issues.
Predator protection – Use hardware cloth (not chicken wire) to keep out raccoons, foxes, and hawks.
Feeding & Nutrition
Chickens require a balanced diet for optimal health and egg production. Essentials include:
Layer feed – Provides the necessary protein and nutrients.
Grit – Helps chickens digest food properly.
Calcium supplements – Crushed oyster shells or eggshells keep eggshells strong.
Treats – Kitchen scraps and scratch grains can be fed in moderation.
Daily & Weekly Care
Chickens are relatively low maintenance, but daily and weekly care is necessary:
Daily: Fresh food and water, egg collection, general health check.
Weekly: Coop cleaning, refilling grit and calcium sources, deep litter turning.
Common Health Issues
Like any livestock, chickens can develop health problems. Common issues include:
Parasites – Mites and lice can be prevented with diatomaceous earth or poultry dust.
Respiratory infections – Good ventilation helps prevent these.
Egg-binding – Calcium supplements and proper nutrition help prevent laying issues.
Egg Laying & Collection
Most hens start laying around 5-6 months old and produce eggs regularly, depending on breed and season. Expect fewer eggs in winter unless supplemental light is used. Collect eggs daily to keep them clean and fresh.
Seasonal Considerations
Summer: Provide shade, cool water, and dust baths to prevent overheating.
Winter: Insulate the coop, ensure proper ventilation, and keep water from freezing.
Legal & Neighborhood Considerations
Before getting chickens, check your local zoning laws. Some areas limit the number of birds or prohibit roosters due to noise concerns. Keeping good relations with neighbors by maintaining a clean coop and managing noise levels is essential.
Expanding Your Flock
Once you have experience, you may want to add more chickens. Introduce new birds gradually, as chickens establish a pecking order that can cause initial aggression.
Final Thoughts
Raising chickens is a rewarding experience that provides food security and self-sufficiency. With the right setup and care, you’ll enjoy fresh eggs, pest control, and even a little entertainment from your flock. Whether you’re just getting started or thinking about expanding, chickens are a valuable addition to any homestead!
